The highest and likely most famous railway in North America climbs Pikes Peak to the summit daily in Manitou Springs Colorado. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is 8.9 miles long. The round trip lasts 3 hours and 10 minutes.  Pikes Peak is named for Zebulon Pike, an early explorer of the Southwest. The lyrics to “America the Beautiful” were written with the view of Pikes Peak in mind. While making the ascent to the top of Pikes Peak at over 14,000 feet you’ll pass through these “zones”:

• Eastern Plains Zone – as you journey to the depot (up to 6,000 feet) you are in what is known as the plains zone.  This zone is comprised of wildflowers and grassland and is home to many small animals like prairie dogs and rabbits.
• Foothills Zone – where the depot is located at 6,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. It’s composed of small bushes and trees.
• Mountain Zone (8,000 to 10,000 feet) - has various wildflowers and small shrubs, but large forests of pines and Douglas fir, as well as the colorful aspen tree, are predominant. Deer, elk, bear and mountain lions can all be found at this altitude.
• Subalpine Zone (10,000 to 11,500 feet) - is less hospitable but still offers small trees and shrubs as you are not above the tree-line just yet.
• Alpine Zone (11,500 feet and above), tundra composed of tiny flowers, mosses and lichen eke out a cold existence in the short growing season.
